FANTA LEARNING SLALOM
STEP 1: ENTRIES / PASO 1: ENTRADAS

This time I wanted to try a different method than what I did previously with my other dogs. Basically I found it very hard for them to learn the entries with the channel method and on the other hand I was never in favor of 2x2 because I couldn't work on speed and independence at the same time, so I decided for a mix of the two methods. Here's lesson 1 - this one seemed very easy with Fanta, basically in 2 or 3 sessions she learned all entries.

I used potato chips boxes for this step and I cut out the bottom (later I will explain why). Ideally I would wrap them with duck tape (different color than my weave poles), but here I didn't have it at home, so I did that in the next step.

The potato chips boxes represent "a door" or what will later become an entry to the channel. I start pretty close, The dog about 2 meters from the "door" and the food machine on the other side, same about 2 meters away. That should be easy, I just rewarded for her passing through the "door". Then I increase the distance between the dog and the door and later also between food machine and the door. The distance should be about 5 meters or more.

After that I started working on entries: Just pick any side you prefer and move in a circle towards the food machine - I would always only progress when the success rate is high, so for example after 3 - 4 nice entries I would go one step further. If I get a mistake or more, I would spend more time at just that entry and really work through it. Eventually the dog should know all entries (be careful where you place the dog and mind helping him to focus on the "door" - so if you are doing the entries from the right side, place the dog on your right focusing the "door". Then repeat the whole process on the other side. Or you can just mix left and right within the same session.
Esta vez quería probar otro método que hice con mis otros perros. Prácticamente me parecía muy difícil para ellos entender las entradas con el método del pasillo y por el otro lado nunca me gusto demasiado el 2x2 por el tema de no poder trabajar con velocidad e independencia al mismo tiempo, así que decidí mezclar los dos métodos. Aquí viene la primera lección - este paso nos parecía muy fácil con Fanta, básicamente lo aprendió todo en 2 o 3 sesiones.

Usé unas cajas de patatas fritas para este paso y recorté el fondo de las cajas (luego explicaré porque). Idealmente hubiera envuelto las cajas en cinta americana (diferente color de los palos de slalom), pero como no la tenía en casa, lo hice en el siguiente paso.

Las cajas de patatas representan una "puerta" o lo que luego será la entrada al pasillo. Empiezo bastante cerca, el perro a unos 2 metros de la "puerta" y la maquina de premios en el otro lado, igual a unos 2 metros lejos. Esto debería ser fácil, solo hay que premiar que pase por la "puerta". Luego aumento la distancia entre el perro y la puerta y también la distancia entre la puerta y la maquina. La distancia tiene que ser unos 5 metros o mas.

Después de esto empiezo a trabajar las entradas: Elige cualquier lado y muévete en circulo hacía la maquina - yo siempre avanzo solo si el percentage de éxito es alto, por ejemplo 3 - 4 buenas entradas para avanzar a la siguiente entrada. Si tenemos algún fallo o mas, me quedo mas tiempo con esa entrada y la trabajo hasta que lo entiende perfecto. Al final el perro debería entender todas las entradas (cuidado con donde colocas el perro y ayúdale enfocar a la "puerta" - si estas haciendo las entradas desde la derecha, coloca el perro a tu derecha y asegúrate que esta mirando hacia la puerta. Luego repite todo el proceso desde el otro lado. Aunque también puedes intercambiar izquierda - derecha dentro de la misma sesión.
STEP 2: CHANNEL / PASO 2: PASILLO
In this step I introduce the channel to the dog. Ideally I would start with only 6 poles instead of 12, but I didn't have them at that time, so I just went straight to 12. If you use 12 poles, you should place the food machine somewhere in the middle of the channel to begin with and work on entries first from a shorter distances (4 - 5 meters). If you work with 6 poles, just place the food machine right at the end of the channel. The boxes that I used for entries in step 1 are now places over the first two poles of the channel, representing the "door". Since the dog is used to search for the "door" from the previous exercise, I would now just repeat all the entries on both sides. The channel should be about 1 meter wide for a start. This is "step 1" in the video below, although since this was not Fanta's first session the channel was already much more narrow than 1 meter.

In "step 2" of the video it's just the same thing working on entries from the other side, didn't film it with Fanta, but it's the easier side so that should go well. I always work a bit more on entries from the left (step 1) which seem to be harder for most dogs.
If all goes well, I would try the same with bigger distance, 7 - 8 meters for entries and food machine much further away - 8 - 9 meters from the channel exit. If you used 6 poles, you can now try with 12. You might want to place the food machine for the first tries closer - and then gradually start moving it further away until you get to 8 - 9 meters. You can see in the video Fanta did not know where the food machine was at first so she turns back in the first try of step 3 in the video. Basically I would just practice this until it's perfect.

In step 4 just repeat the same thing working on entries from the other side.
En este paso empiezo con el pasillo. Idealmente empiezo con 6 palos en vez de 12, pero no he tenido esa opción así que empece directamente con 12. Si vas a empezar con 12 palos, coloca la maquina en el medio del pasillo y al principio trabaja las entradas desde mas cerca (4 - 5 metros). Si vas a empezar con 6 palos, simplemente coloca la maquina justo al final del pasillo. Las cajas que he usado en el paso 1 están ahora encima de los dos primeros palos y representan una "puerta". El perro esta acostumbrado a buscar la "puerta" desde el ejercicio anterior, así que por ahora solo repaso todas las entradas desde los dos lados. El pasillo tiene que estar aproximadamente 1 metro de ancho para empezar. Esto es el "paso 1" del video abajo, pero como esto no era la primera sesión de Fanta, ya lo teníamos mucho mas cerrado que 1 metro.

En "paso 2" del video trabajamos lo mismo pero las entradas desde el otro lado. No lo he grabado con Fanta, pero normalmente este es el lado fácil y no deberías tener muchos problemas. Siempre trabajo un poquito mas el lado izquierdo (paso 1), porque normalmente es mas difícil para la mayoría de los perros.

Si todo va bien, prueba con mas distancia, 7 - 8 metros para las entradas y la maquina de comida mucho mas lejos - 8 - 9 metros de la salida del pasillo. Si has empezado con 6 palos, puedes probar ahora con 12. Para los primeros intentos quizás mejor coloca la maquina mas cerca - y solo luego empieza a alejar hasta que llegues a 8 - 9 metros. En el video puedes ver que Fanta no veía la maquina en el primer intento del paso 3, por eso se dio la vuelta. Y luego simplemente practico esto hasta que este perfecto.

En paso 4 solo repito lo mismo pero desde el otro lado.
STEP 3 - TOY REWARD / PASO 3 - JUGUETE
In this step we just continue from where we left off in the previous step, but this time we replace the food machine with a thrown toy to get more speed. Some dogs would just stop thinking as soon as toy and excitement is involved and some would lack speed when working for food, so I do introduce toy reward before I start closing the channel. At the same time I start adding some more movement, running till the end of the channel with the dog.
En este paso solo continuamos desde donde hemos acabado en el paso anterior, pero esta vez cambiamos la maquina de comida por juguete. Algunos perros dejan de pensar en el momento que ven el juguete y se excitan, otros no van con suficiente velocidad por comida, así que introduzco el juguete en el proceso antes de empezar a cerrar el pasillo. Al mismo tiempo empiezo con mas movimiento, corriendo hasta el final del pasillo con el perro.
